Anime is coming to artmania!
The first anime was a short, silent film made in Japan in 1917, but it wasn’t until 1956, and the founding of the Toei Animation Company that the anime style gained popularity. The word anime is the abbreviated pronunciation of “animation” in Japanese. “Outside Japan, anime is used to refer specifically to animation from Japan or as a Japanese-disseminated animation style often characterized by colorful graphics, vibrant characters and fantastical themes.” In the 1950’s, Osamu Tezuka inspired the term “Manga” to refer to the comic books that use the anime style for their characters and stories. During the late 1980’s and up until mid/late 1990’s, Japan’s anime and manga style became an international sensation. The first decade of the 2000’s saw a small decline in it’s popularity, but it’s now becoming more and more popular.
Artmania’s mobile classes will use this Japanese style to tell their fantastical stories! Instructors are leading students through the anatomy of anime. Students will be given plenty of time to practice this technique in their sketchbooks as instructors help students imagine and create their own manga stories
I’m looking forward to watching these stories unfold. Follow my blog posts for updates.
