What is Encaustic Painting?

To put it simply, encaustic means painting with hot wax. Painting with wax is an ancient art form that can be traced back to ancient Greece. Greek artists used encaustic paints as a way to beautify sculptures, statues, murals, boats, and various architecture.

As Greek art made its way into Egypt, the Egyptians began incorporating the method of hot wax painting into their own art. They also used it in their mummification processes.

This drop in class will give you the information you need to start creating your own beautiful works in encaustic. We’ll have fun experimenting with oil paints, mixed media, photo transfer and fabric. We will guide you through any technical issues so you can take your encaustic painting to the next level.
